Daniel 'KidPoker' Negreanu Wins $50k Players Championship for Long Overdue 7th Bracelet

Finally, after years of misfires and hitting crossbars, Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu has claimed his seventh career World Series of Poker winners bracelet.

The GG Poker Ambassador’s triumph occurred in the $50,000 Players Championship (9-Game Format) where he emerged as the victor after five long days of mixed games, defeating a high quality field of 89 players to take down the $1,178,703 first prize.

Negreanu was clearly emotional in immediate aftermath, having taken several hours to defeat runner-up Byrce Yockey. Wife Amanda joined him on set to congratulate him, the first of his seven bracelets that she has been able to do so for, as they were not together when he won his last one.

It’s the first WSOP win that Las Vegas resident Daniel Negreanu has notched up since 2013 and also the first time viewers of his Vlog have had something really big to celebrate.

Episode 31 of Daniel Does Vegas 2024 finally gets its money-shot. It is due to premiere on Friday 28th June at 6.15pm (CET) on Daniel's YouTube Channel.

Players Championship Final Table

The final day of the gruelling tournament resumed with just five players left from a field of 89 entries. Negreanu had the second biggest stack, behind chip leader Chris Brewer.

The first player to be eliminated was short stack David Benyamin, who returned with less than 1m chips and despite doubling up soon after the restart, he exited in 5th place for $256k during the Razz part of the rotation, taken out by Bryce Yockey.

Dylan Smith was the only player who made the money who had not previously won a WSOP bracelet and that situation will remain for him for now, as he left the tournament soon after Benyamine, in 4th place for $363k. His vanquisher was also Yockey, in another Razz hand.

By the time they became three-handed the chip lead had changed a few times. Daniel briefly held the lead early on in the day before he and Chris Brewer fell back, as Bryce Yockey began to dominate. It was Yockey who assumed the lead going into the 3-handed stage of the game.

It was a No Limit Hold’em hand that ended Chris Brewer’s hopes, when his aces were beaten by a rivered flush. Brewer’s stack had been drooping for quite some time before he was sent to the rail in third place, also at the hands of Yockey, who was looking to make a clean sweep of his scalping opponents, in a charge for the title.

Heads Up for the Title

When the heads-up encounter began Yockey held a 5m chip lead and it could have been a short one, as he extended the lead to over 8m chips within the first few hands. However Negreanu began to fight back and even managed to carve out a brief chip lead, before Yockey reasserted his dominance during the 2-7 Triple draw part part of the rotation.

During the NLH stretch Negreanu managed to retake the lead and held on to it for longer this time, but once again Yockey fought back to retake the top spot. This time it looked ominous with Negreanu dropping down to just 6m chips during a seven card stud hand.

However the best known player in poker dug deep and hung on, rivering trip deuces in a Pot Limit Omaha hand, that would otherwise have handed the title to Yockey.

After this double up Negreanu never looked back, pulling further and further away from Yockey, who was down to less than 7m when the final hand occurred, after over three hours of heads up play.

In the final hand of Pot Limit Omaha, Negreanu made a full house to seal the deal and experience seventh heaven at the WSOP.

Back in the Black

This win now puts the Canadian pro into the black for the WSOP 2024, wiping out the $920,597 losses that he had accumulated in the first four weeks of the series. He is $258,106 in profit and should now end the series significantly up for the first time in many years.

Although there are still almost 30 events left on the 2024 WSOP schedule, the vast majority of these run side-by-side with the $10,000 Main Event, which begins on July 3rd. Negreanu would literally have to fire everything and get no further cashes to be down on the series this year.

Then again, multiple bullets in the $25k and $50k events could take him back into the red. But it’s more likely that Negreanu takes it easy from now on, plays the bigger events and the Main Event and maybe one or two smaller ones, to keep the fans happy.

Player of the Year Leaderboard Update

This victory restores Negreanu's chances of winning a third Player of the Year title. He was outside the top 100 prior to this win, but is now sitting in 6th place on the leaderboard.

He is still someway behind front runners Jeremy Ausmus, Chris Hunichen and Scott Seiver. In order to close the gap, KidPoker will have to get even more real and shoot for bracelet number eight during the remainder of the series.
