Unibet Poker Review

Unibet has been offering players online gaming for more than 25 years and remains a popular option for players around the world. The site works hard to cater to recreational players and offers some nice tournament and cash game options.

The site even declares: “We want poker to be the fun, social game with which we fell in love.” That carries over to some of the site’s player-friendly tournament fee structure and promotions. Rec players should definitely give Unibet a try.

Read on four our full guide and everything you need to know about Unibet and there poker rooms.

About Unibet

Unibet was founded in 1997 and is owned by the Kindred Group, one of the largest online gaming companies in the world. Kindred owns several popular gaming sites and is based out of Malta. The company is regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner as well as the United Kingdom Gambling Commission. The company now serves 11 million players in 100 countries worldwide.

In 1999, Unibet Poker joined the company’s holding and the platform is especially popular among players in Europe and the UK. The company’s poker offering was originally part of the Microgaming Poker Network (MPN) but Unibet launched its own poker platform in 2014. This allowed Unibet to tailor its platform to its own customers and goals for online poker.

As noted, many of those goals include gearing the product toward recreational players and keeping the fun in poker. That includes barring the use of poker tracking software. Another interesting twist is that Unibet players can change their usernames up to three times a day. This helps prevent top players from singling out less-experienced players.

The company continues adding to the site and released a completely new and upgraded poker client in 2020. The mobile app also received a significant upgrade.

It’s difficult to find a poker site that works harder to appeal to Average Joe players than Unibet. Those who just enjoy playing for fun with a shot at some nice wins or even more seasoned poker novices will find some great action at Unibet.

Unibet Poker Pros & Cons

Anonymous play ensured via unlimited screen name changes

Tracking software such as PokerTracker does not work

Early finishing tournaments, good for players with day jobs

Soft cash games and tournaments, with affordable buy-ins and medium sized fields, often with overlays

Unique formats like the Banzai cash game

Low liquidity at off-peak times of day

Smaller daily MTT schedule than on other sites and low guarantees

Cash Games

Can games players will find some nice options at Unibet. The site traditionally features only No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha cash games. You can also play for real money or give the site a shot using play money. One thing to also note is that Unibet denominations are in euros.

As one might expect on a platform geared toward beginners and rec players, the Unibet software is simple and easy to use. As per the site’s goal of catering to lower rollers and recreational players, players will generally find smaller cash games stakes at Unibet.

Cash games start at just €0.02/€0.04 and top out generally in the €2/€4 range. In May 2023, the site was seeing average cash game players of 500 to 600 daily. That reached 24-hour peaks as high as 1,000, so the site offers some nice traffic for players and usually checks in among the top 15 international online poker sites in terms of traffic.

Banzai tables are another option for cash game players. This is Unibet’s fast-fold game, sending players from table to table as soon as they fold their hands. This keeps the action coming quickly.

Tournaments

Those who enjoy some tournaments, but with lower and more moderate priced buy-ins are in luck at Unibet. Each series, such as the traditional Unibet Online Series, known on the site as UOS, feature numerous buy-in levels with many checking in at only €1 and up.

Micro-stakes events are also usually rake-free during these series, a nice positive for low rollers. Daily tournaments run from €0.25 to €200 with guarantees from €30 to €5,000.

A typical UOS festival may feature buy-ins from €0.50 to €300. These events usually feature several versions of each tournament including Nano, Low, Mid, and High buy-in levels. For example, a recent series included the Main Event options:

  • €300 High – €30,000 guaranteed
  • €10 Low – €4,000 guaranteed
  • €0.50 Nano – €400 guarantees

The site also usually features no more than a single rebuy, a nice addition for players on smaller bankrolls. Most tournaments are all single-day events, more fitting for recreational players, with the exception of the High main event, which often plays out over two days.

Unibet also now offers progressive knockout (PKO) tournaments. These are different from traditional bounty events with players only winning a portion of an opponent’s bounty.

Instead, a portion of that bounty is placed on the winning player’s head, which sees bounties increase in amount throughout the tournament. This makes for some fun dynamics throughout the tournament and PKO events have become extremely popular among players in recent years.

The site also offers regular promotions as part of the daily tournament schedule. A few tournament events and promotions include:

  • Wild Wednesdays – These events usually come with some exclusive avatars up for grabs.
  • Freerolls – Unibet goes above and beyond, offering daily freerolls almost every hour for players to build a bankroll with some free cash without putting up any money to buy in.
  • The Chip Race Series – Unibet sponsors the popular Chip Race podcast and this series featured hosts David Lappin and Dara O’Kearney with numerous events in the €25 to €100 range. The entire series included an overall guarantee of €200,000.
  • Spring Poker Championship – Another nice festival for players. The 2023 edition featured €500,000 guaranteed with promotions offering an extra €20,000 in added value.

Unibet also offers plenty of sit & go action as well as Hexapro tournaments, the site’s version of the jackpot sit & go tournament. Hexapros come with buy-ins from €1 to €100 with players battling for a random prize pool from 1.5 to 1,000 times the buy-in.

The Hexapro leaderboards offer €1,000 up for grabs each day. The promotion is geared toward occasional and recreational players.

“Our daily leaderboard promotion is specially designed for recreational poker players who cannot play every day for a month to have a chance to win,” Unibet noted of the program on Twitter.

Players looking to attend some major live poker tournaments are also in luck with Unibet. The company sponsors several major events including the Unibet UK Poker Tour. Since 2007, the site has also run the popular Unibet Poker Open.

The company still works to appeal to recreational players with numerous online qualifiers available for the live festival. Players have a chance to grab a complete tournament package. The tournament was held in Malta in 2022 as the tournament celebrated its 15th anniversary.

Even the Main Event only came with only a €1,100 buy-in, not a real high stakes affair. Denmark’s Henrik Juncker came out on top for €75,000. The tournament saw 359 entries for a €359,000 prize pool. Numerous qualifiers take part in the event each year.

Unibet Poker Extras

Beyond the traditional Unibet software client, the company also offers players a browser-based quick-play option. Players can simply head to a web browser, log in, and enjoy some fun online poker.

Unibet also offers plenty of fun avatars, another effort to keep the game fun and appeal to a wide range of recreational players. A mobile app is also available for iOS and Android users, allowing for easy play on the go.

The “quick-play” browser-based play option also allows players to get in the action easily on a phone or tablet device. Multi-tabling is also available on the app – up to four on a mobile phone and five on a tablet. Overall, the mobile app offers a close approximation of the desktop poker client.

Unibet offers a unique loyalty program that has players looking to complete various challenges to earn some rewards. Players will find both minor and major challenges that include simply being dealt a certain hand, playing a number of hands, or winning a pot with a certain hand.

Those who complete some of these challenges can earn reward points, cash bonuses, tournament tickets, and more. Those who accumulate 100,000 points earn a spot in a special freeroll with tournament packages for the live Unibet Open are awarded.

Players who accrue 500,000 in a quarter grab a custom avatar. With Unibet, even the rewards program is designed to keep players having fun on the site.
