- GG Masters Overlay Ediiton Missed Guarantee by $768,628
- Two-way deal done heads up
- Canadian player 'freefalas" win, scooping less than the overlay
- Runner-Up is Austrian player "Andras Nemeth"
The GG Masters Overlay Edition 2024 is now over and as billed, it did indeed produce an overlay.
Things had been going well after the first three starting days, with a combined 23,355 entries, leading some to doubt (including myself) that there would actually be an overlay. However participation in the remaining starting days didn’t match that of the opening day and the $150 buy-in tournament was left with an overlay of $768,628.
There were 66,894 entries in total across all the starting days and day 23 began with 6,679 players returning, all of whom were in the prize money and guaranteed at least $346 in overlay juiced prize money.
Day | Entries | Collected Prize Pool |
---|---|---|
Day 1a (Asia) | 6,083 | $839,454 |
Day 1a (Europe) | 13,201 | $1,821,738 |
Day 1a (Americas) | 4,071 | $561,798 |
Day 1b | 7179 | $990,702 |
Day 1c (Asia) | 6585 | $908,730 |
Day 1c (Europe) | 9714 | $1,340,532 |
Day 1c (Americas) | 5118 | $706,284 |
Day 1d (Asia) | 4550 | $627,900 |
Day 1d | 5202 | $717,876 |
Day 1d Last Chance | 5191 | $716,358 |
Totals | 66,894 | $9,231,372 |
Day two played all the way down to the final 9, who fought it out for the big money on the third and final day of the tournament.
The final was contested between two Canadians and players from seven other countries: China, Vietnam, Brazil, Albania, Austria, Japan and Taiwan. Chinese player ‘SuperNano-X’ on 121.3m held a narrow chip lead over Vietnam’s ‘neverfold7bet’ on 117.4m going into the final.
It was eventually won by Canadian ‘freefalas’ with Austrian ‘Andras Nemeth’ taking second. These two had done a deal when they git heads-up and in fact it was Nemeth who took the most out of the deal, as he had held the chip lead at the time it was carved up.
Winner ‘freefalas’ ended up with $678,967 while runner up ‘Andras Nemeth’ took $699,874, but missed out on the title.
How much did it cost GG Poker?
It was an overlay of $768,628, however there were 66,894 x $12 fees collected, which amounts to $802,728, so when this is taken into consideration, it didn’t cost GG Poker anything, in fact on the face of it they still made a profit of $34,100.
However this does not take into consideration the vast number of free $25 satellite tickets that GG Poker dropped into people’s accounts prior to the first starting day of the event. Two such $25 satellites that took place just before the start of Day 1a (Europe) and Day 1a (Americas) had huge numbers of participants, with over 25,000 entries in one and over 11,000 in another.
It seems likely that the majority of players who entered these satellites did so with free tickets dropped into their account a couple of days earlier. This would equate to perhaps $500,000 in free satellite ticket giveaways.
There were also missed guarantees in some satellites so all in all its fair to say that GG had to reach deep into its pockets to put on the show that is the GG Masters Overlay Edition.
Will Guarantee be Increased in 2025?
The question remains however about where they will go with this event next year, for the 5th GG Masters Overlay Edition? They stuck at $10m this year and although they still missed the guarantee, they got $400,000 closer than last year.
With ACR stepping up the Venom guarantee to $12.5m, it seems likely that GG Poker will make a move upwards next year and $12m or $12.5m seem like good candidates for the size of next year’s guarantee. Or could they surprise us even further and crank things up a notch further and make it $15m?
That would be bold and it would probably cost them several million in overlay, but as the world’s biggest poker site (by quite some distance), they could easily afford it.
WSOP Super Circuit Online Series
With the GG Masters Overlay Edition now over, focus on GG Poker turns to the WSOP. The full schedule of events for the 55th World Series of Poker was revealed last week and it surely won’t be long before the site unveils its Road to Vegas promotion, with the expectation being that they will be guaranteeing over 1,000 packages this year.
However before the focus turns to qualifying for the WSOP Main Event, the next major online series is the World Series of Poker Super Circuit Online Series, which gets underway on March 3rd and runs until April 1st, with 18 WSOPC Gold Ring being awarded.
Satellites are already underway, with buy-in starting from as little as $6. The Main Event of the series costs $525 to enter, however the event is the Mini Main Event, which at $50 buy-in is a very affordable way to try and win a WSOP Gold Bracelet.
If you want to participate, but are are yet to register, use the GG Poker bonus code wired to get started with a 100% deposit match worth up to $600.
